Bootham achieves a rare combination
of high academic performance and a good, friendly relationship
between boys and girls and their teachers. It may be a less formal
approach to work than you will find in other schools but it is
undoubtedly effective and successful. For those looking for an
alternative approach to schooling, but one with academic rigour
and high expectations of each individual, Bootham may well be
the ideal school. We teach pupils to think for themselves, to
respect other people and to be open to new ideas as well as to
succeed in their examinations.
Bootham was founded in 1823 as an
academic school. Even then, many who were not from Quaker families
enjoyed the opportunities which the school offered, and the school
has long been know as a place where members of all faiths can live
happily together.
There is a surprisingly wide range
of subjects for a comparatively small school. We wish to remain
at a size where teachers and pupils can work together as individuals,
so class sizes are small too. Thus a pupil can receive his or
her proper share of the teacher's attention and guidance.
At Bootham, we seek to find and bring
out each girl's or boy's full potential, to encourage self-discipline
and self-motivation, to instill a sense of purpose and an awareness
of the needs of others, and to encourage responsibility and thoughtfulness
in all we do.
Bootham's programme of Careers advice
and Work Experience is considered to be outstanding. Our girls and
boys gain experience of working life once their GCSE examinations
have been completed.
Bootham pupils have achieved success
in the full range of sports, both individually and teams. Pupils
gain district, county and national honours. But the most important
aspect of sport at Bootham is a determination to give pupils a
chance to try something new, to learn skills and understanding,
and to gain a truly sporting outlook which will stay with them
long after they have left school.
In the boarding houses, there are
opportunities to relax, as well as for quiet reading or experiments
in cookery! Bootham is a caring community, with experienced resident
staff providing sympathy and support whenever they may be needed.
