Cambridge Centre
for Sixth-form Studies

CCSS is a unique and special place to learn.
At a time when the best universities are looking for more than top grade passes, we firmly believe that the pathway to university lies not just in excellent teaching, but in close pastoral care, a broad education and personal guidance from dedicated and experienced teachers.

General
CCSS is a co-educational sixth-form college offering GCSE and A-level courses to 200 students, supported by 120 staff. The college provides close academic supervision, a friendly, informal atmosphere and high levels of pastoral care. One-to-one private tutorials are an important and unique part of all A-level courses on top of group lessons. The small class sizes (averaging 6 students) allow plenty of opportunity for individual involvement and for developing each student's levels of understanding. A full and flexible GCSE curriculum is offered and at A-level there are over 33 subjects to choose from, without restrictions on choice.

Location and Facilities
CCSS is based in the exciting university town of Cambridge, close to the railway station and 50-minutes’ train-ride from London, with easy connections to international airports. Our three teaching sites are within a few minutes' walk of each other and house 40 classrooms including laboratories, study rooms and specialist facilities for subjects such as Modern Languages, Media Studies, Art, Photography and Computing. With the opening of our new teaching site, Benet Place, this offers brand new classrooms, drama studio, student common areas and careers library. The College Houses provide fully supervised single-room accommodation for 115 boarding students.

Preparation for university
For many students contemplating A-levels, a change of school is the right choice to make. Most students have one clear aim in mind when entering a sixth form: taking up a university course that is appropriate for their future aspirations. Yet so many make choices for university that all too often result in them underachieving or even dropping out. CCSS takes its mission seriously: we prepare students not just academically through excellent teaching but also socially for the university years ahead. With close guidance from teachers and tutors, our students develop a greater sense of responsibility, respect for themselves and others, and confidence in their own abilities – all essential for later success at university and beyond.

Our full programme of support for university includes individual weekly tutorials, practice interviews, visits to universities and additional careers guidance such as our annual careers convention where students can meet practitioners from a variety of fields.

The great majority of students graduating from CCSS go on to university in the UK or elsewhere, with many enjoying success at Cambridge, Oxford, LSE and other top universities in subjects ranging from International Business to Law and Medicine.

Recent Inspection Results
The results of the recent inspection, carried out by the Independent Schools Inspectorate in February 2008, were overwhelmingly positive. Inspectors said that “CCSS provides a high quality educational experience”, achieving its aim of providing an individual approach to every student. They also rated teaching as “high quality” and pastoral care as “outstanding”.
