Pastoral Care and Personal Development

A sense of security underpins every child's Chapter House education. All the staff are well known to them and supervise each day's activities in a caring, approachable way.

There are lots of activities and clubs to occupy pupils but if they choose to spend play and lunch times in the playground there is plenty to do, supervised by teachers to ensure their well-being.

Chapter House's dining facilities are first class, with a good choice of food in a spacious, beautifully furnished refectory. Special diets are provided where needed.

The children are encouraged to spend their time productively and leisure time is well catered for with plenty of books and stimulating games providing a range of alternatives to outdoor play.

A merit system rewards good work and conduct and we put great emphasis on values such as loyalty, respect, tolerance, friendship and good manners.

A Superb Educational Foundation

At eleven years of age pupils move up to our sister school, Queen Ethelburga's,with which we share our superb campus.

Queen Ethelburga's consistently achieves examination results well above the national average, and is proud to have a history of being one of the FT's top schools for A-level passes.

The assurance of a very high quality senior school education with the continuity of remaining on a familiar, superb campus, makes Chapter House Preparatory School and Queen Ethelburga's College a combination which many parents find ideal.

GCSE and A-level examinations may seem a distant prospect at the age of eleven, but this is exactly the time to plan the best senior school education for each individual. Queen Ethelburga's is a modern, forward-looking school with a record of excellent GCSE grades and a uniquely flexible approach to sixth form course options. These include A-levels, of course, which are still the preferred choice of most sixth formers.

Career orientated courses are in increasing demand, and the Queen Ethelburga's Collegiate Foundation offers an excellent choice of sixth form options which include the Photography, Fashion and Design, BHSAI Equestrian Studies and Information Technology courses.

Moving from Chapter House to Queen Ethelburga's provides every student with the assurance of a first-class education, leading to the widest choice of sixth form studies available at any school.

Special Needs Provision

It is now widely recognised that some children have a specific learning difficulty such as dyslexia, which can cast a shadow over their academic potential; it is equally clear that many extremely bright pupils may fail to achieve their full potential if such a difficulty is not recognised and dealt with. Chapter House has particular expertise in this area, with teaching staff who are well qualified to identify key aspects and help children deal with them.

Pupils benefit from the individual attention; therefore those who have any problems in keeping pace with their peers can be quickly spotted and provided with structured help by highly qualified teaching specialist. They also gain enormously in confidence from activities such as drama and public speaking, and from the support and friendship of their fellow students and the sympathetic staff.

It is of equal importance to identify boys and girls who are academic high-fliers and to tailor their school programme accordingly, in order that they continue to remain intellectually stimulated. This will avoid their 'coasting' through a vital phase of their education.

Living On Campus

Benedict House, home to pupils who live on campus, is thought by many to be one of the best examples of modern, comfortable school residential accommodation in Europe. Boys and girls from 6 years upwards may live on campus in separate areas.

There is a strong sense of community, much of it finding a focal point in the farmhouse kitchen/common rooms, all with cooking facilities, which welcome every kind of gathering, from an impromptu coffee and toast to a convivial 'at home' get-together.

We understand and are responsive to the need for our school to be a happy and co-operative environment, in order to meet high academic aims, and our campus provides a wonderful basis upon which our pupils can build a thriving and fulfilling school life.

We understand and are responsive to the need for our school to be a happy and co-operative environment, in order to meet high academic aims, and our campus provides a wonderful basis upon which our pupils can build a thriving and fulfilling school life.

The house staff consists of a Head of Boarding, houseparents, medical and teaching staff of the College, all dedicated to the welfare of our pupils. All staff have a great deal of experience and common sense, providing the warm and supportive atmosphere which has meant, each year more and more pupils have chosen to live on campus. A close link is maintained between home and school. Parents are kept properly advised about their children's well being. We believe a high level of care is of paramount importance and many parents have commented favourably on our attention to detail to ensure the campus is 'safe'.

On every floor, there are cosy kitchen common rooms with remote control 20-channel satellite TV/video and music centre. A mini gym, games room and hard outside play area for biking and roller-blading is also available.

Benedict House is home, and we go to great lengths to make it as homely as possible. For example, pupils may, within reason, bring their small pets such as a rabbit, gerbil, hamster or goldfish to school.

The freedom to go out, especially at weekends, is an important part of life. Saturday morning shopping in Harrogate or York is always popular and is accompanied. On Sundays all manner of places can be visited: theme parks, historic sites, exhibition centres, ice rinks, tourist attractions, cinemas, theatres, concert halls. Suffice it to say the list is endless.

The number of pupils to a room varies - normally from 2 to 6. Every bedroom is provided with a direct dial-in-and-out telephone and answering machine, TV/video, tea and coffee making facilities, radio/tape/CD music centre, a hair dryer, powered ventilation, wash hand-basin, heated towel rail and fan.

Our first-class medical centre has its own private bathroom, comfortable beds and cheerful decor.

Benedict House provides the space to be alone or have peace and quiet, and the space to have fun with one's friends.

Occasional Boarding

There are occasions when parents need to be away from home and want the security of knowing that their children are being cared for. Any member of Chapter House from the age of 6 upwards may stay overnight, from one day to a whole term.

Day Pupils

Those children who travel to school daily may use one of our fleet of minibuses, all of which are equipped with seat belts. In the morning our drivers keep to a timetable so that no child has to wait a long time for the bus. At night, no child is allowed to leave the bus unless there is someone to meet them.

The Campus

Our campus has been carefully designed to blend the traditions of our beautiful old buildings with the need to provide the most up-to-date facilities of any independent preparatory school in Europe.

Chapter House Preparatory School benefits from sharing our campus with Queen Ethelburga's College, and over £17,000,000 has been spent on new building work and equipment, all painstakingly combined to create a stimulating and rewarding environment, unrivaled elsewhere.
