One of the UK's Leading Independent Schools
|
Merchiston Castle School is
situated in Edinburgh, one of Europe's most historic and
thriving cultural centres. Merchiston is set in 100 acres
of beautiful parkland just 20 minutes from Edinburgh's international
airport and railway station. |
 |
Merchiston has a friendly atmosphere
and pastoral care is a top priority; that this is in fact the
case is clearly acknowledged in the recent 'Care and Welfare'
report by H. M. Inspectorate of Education.
With an ethos based on traditional
values, the School encourages self-reliance and independence,
as well as respect and tolerance for others. It believes in the
importance of hard work, integrity and good manners. Pupils are
motivated to try their hardest and achieve their best. With
a generous teacher to pupil ratio of 1:9, Merchiston is particularly
renowned for its academic excellence. In 2008 79% of A Level grades were awarded at A and B, whilst
at GCSE 84% of the grades were awarded at A and B. In addition,
87% of students gained places at their first choice of university. |
 |
The School has an unrivalled
reputation for providing an excellent all-round education.
Recent highlights include national awards in Electronics
and Engineering; a choir which has gained an international
reputation; a multicultural educational exchange project
in Fiji; a much acclaimed production in the Edinburgh Festival;
medals won at the British Maths, Chemistry and Physics Olympiads, and students achieving international
recognition in a wide range of sports. |
The School has strong links with
a number of girls' schools, providing ample opportunities for
boys and girls to mix in academic, sporting and social pursuits.
There are some excellent modern facilities
including a teaching centre for the 8 to 10 year olds, recently renovated science laboratories, library, and a purpose built music and technology centre.
A state of the art Sixth Form House, with en-suite accommodation,
is planned for the near future. Amongst other facilities, there is a chapel,
sports hall, indoor swimming pool and theatre, and extensive playing fields including rugby, cricket and football pitches. All students have
their own e-mail address as well as access to the World Wide Web.
Merchiston welcomes pupils from all
over the world who wish to experience the British educational
system. English for speakers of other languages (ESOL) is available. The
school also has its own Guardianship scheme as well as recommending
a number of well established agencies.
