Queen Ethelburga's welcomes girls and boys aged 11 to 19 who share our philosophy of "To Be The Best That I Can With The Gifts That I Have" and who seek a better quality of life at school as day pupils or residents on campus.

Our Philosophy

  • To offer all pupils a broad and balanced curriculum

  • To foster a spirit of enquiry
  • To encourage self-discipline and expect a high standard of behaviour
  • To provide a happy and stimulating environment for study
  • To prepare pupils for future educational and working environments
  • To foster and promote caring for others and spiritual development
  • To encourage physical and mental fitness
  • To promote community and global awareness
  • To equip pupils with technological expertise
  • To provide a safe and secure environment in which pupils can thrive

A Tradition of Excellence

In the eight decades since its foundation in 1912, Queen Ethelburga's College has become one of Britain's best known and finest schools, with an enviable reputation nationally and internationally for friendliness, excellence and care.

Our capital spending programme ensures a campus which provides the highest quality of facilities. Investments totaling some £17 million in only the last few years help us to give our students the advantages that can lead to outstanding success, from Pentium computers to the comfort of knowing that there is a telephone and answering machine in every bedroom in Abbey Chambers, our living accommodation on the campus.

Each year we continue to extend our resources, which increasing numbers of parents recognise as giving an unrivalled opportunity to their children.

We are helped in our endeavours by Queen Ethelburga's College Charitable Foundation, which financially supports us and subsidizes our fees to be as much as 20% lower than those of other prestigious schools.

We at Q E believe in having a school where every pupil matters, therefore we are not a large school, and we have no desire or need to be, yet our facilities are second to none.

Thorpe Underwood Hall

At the heart of our magnificent campus with its modern amenities, is Thorpe Underwood Hall. We are beautifully situated between Harrogate and York.

The Campus on the Thorpe Underwood Hall Estate extends to over 100 acres of grounds and includes an enclosed, walled, 'secret' garden, a formal rose garden with a fountain, acres of informal lawns. As a foundation for a happy and secure school environment, the Thorpe Underwood Hall campus has few equals.

Living on Campus

Abbey Chambers, home to pupils who live on campus, is thought by many to be one of the best example of modern, comfortable school residential accommodation in Europe.

There is a strong sense of community, much of it finding a focal point in the farmhouse kitchen/common rooms, all with comprehensive cooking facilities, which welcome every kind of gathering, from an impromptu coffee and toast to a convivial 'at home' dinner.

We understand and are responsive to the need for our school to be a happy and co-operative environment, in order to meet high academic aims, and our campus provides a wonderful basis upon which our pupils can build a thriving and fulfilling school life.

The house staff consists of a Head of Boarding, Houseparents, medical and teaching staff of the college, all dedicated to the welfare of our students. All staff have a great deal of experience and common sense, providing the warm and supportive atmosphere which has meant, each year, more and more students have chosen to live on campus. A close link is maintained between home and school. Parents are kept properly advised about their children's well-being. We believe a high level of care is of paramount importance and many parents have commented favourably on our attention to detail to ensure the campus is 'safe'.

Abbey Chambers and Benedict House are home, and we go to great lengths to make them as homely as possible. For example, pupils may, within reason, bring their small pets such as a rabbit, gerbil, hamster or goldfish, to school.

The freedom to go out, especially at weekends, is an important part of life. Saturday morning shopping in Harrogate or York is always popular. On Sunday, all manner of places can be visited, theme parks, historic sites, exhibition centres, ice rinks, tourist attractions, cinemas, concert halls. Suffice it to say the list is endless.

The number of students to a room varies - normally from 6 down to 2 and eventually one, dependent on age and the number of pupils we have. Every bedroom is provided with a direct dial-in-and-out telephone and answering machine, timer controlled TV/video, tea and coffee making facilities, radio/tape/CD music centre, a hair dryer, powered ventilation, wash hand basin, heated towel rail and fan.

Our first-class medical centre has its own private bathroom, comfortable beds and cheerful decor. Our living accommodation provides the space to be alone or have peace and quiet, and the space to have fun with one's friends.

Day Pupils

The specialist Day Centre is housed within Abbey Chambers with direct access from outside. Overnight accommodation is available in case of parental business trips, bad weather etc. and facilities are of the highest standard.

Information Technology

Every student who leaves Q.E. will have the IT skills to enter a world which is demanding a higher level of computer literacy.

We have invested in the latest technology with fast Pentium computers in our large multi-media network and in stand-alones throughout our academic departments. We have an IT Development director who assesses the needs of individuals and plans courses from Computer Literacy and Information Technology to A-level Information Systems.

Our pupils are confident in the use of modern software including the latest word processing, spreadsheet and database, publishing and drawing packages, presentation software and all the skills necessary to provide coursework in all subjects to the highest standard.

Queen Ethelburga's pupils consistently achieve a high level of GCSE success and then follow a Sixth form A-level course of study. (Pupils interested in riding often combine A-levels with the BHSAI course)

Sixth form is a uniquely fulfilling and enjoyable phase, during which our A-level students gain the knowledge to take them forward to higher education and adopt more responsibilities along with greater freedom.

Career Development

Queen Ethelburga's adopts an enlightened and positive approach to career development, helping every student, throughout their school career to make plans for later life based upon their abilities and interests. The subject is well resourced; our computer database includes substantial careers information, as do the school's libraries. Talks and presentations by outside speakers provide objective information which supplements the discussions held between pupils and teachers at formal and informal levels. The school is a member of the Independent Schools Careers Organisation and several staff are trained Careers Advisors.

The scope of learning available within Queen Ethelburga's programme is wide, supported by a highly trained graduate teaching staff who, in turn, enjoy the support of the most modern equipment, a plentiful supply of text books and excellent library and reference provision.

Investment in academic facilities is continuous, a mark of our determination to uphold Queen Ethelburga's reputation for high academic achievement and extend it still further in the future. It is no accident that QE has a history of being amongst the Financial Times top schools for A-level passes.

The Sciences

A science centre encompasses the Chemistry, Physics and Biology departments whilst providing separate purpose-fitted laboratories for each discipline. All science staff are graduate specialists. The study of Maths and the sciences is structured to demonstrate the links between ideas, experimentation and practical applications. This helps our students to develop a clear analytical approach which will continue to every facet of their academic work.

Advancing each pupil's knowledge of the scientific fundamentals, as part of the school's core curriculum, is linked with the relevance of science to everyday life now and in the future; the students are encouraged to adopt a questioning approach to their studies and explore the creative aspects of scientific developments.

The Arts

Our Art and Design centre includes facilities for computer-aided graphic design, as well as the Fine Arts studio. Many Queen Ethelburga's Art students progress to higher education courses at art colleges and universities. This year, Fashion and Design has been added to the curriculum.

Every aspect of Music is catered for, both as a specific area of class and individual study and as an integral part of our Dramatic Arts programme.

Highly qualified teachers provide tuition on a wide range of instruments. There are plenty of individual practice rooms, a keyboard laboratory and a Music studio to encourage all pupils whatever their music talent, from the beginner to the accomplished musician.

Music, the visual arts and performance combine in a programme of cultural activities of which the College is justly proud. A new air-conditioned drama studio is equipped with professional-standard lighting and stage equipment, complete with closed-circuit TV. It can be quickly transformed into a 200-seat theatre to stage the school's regular theatrical and musical productions. Studying Theatre Studies and Performing Arts to A-level standard is a popular option with Queen Ethelburga's students who have achieved excellent results.

The Humanities

The emphasis at Queen Ethelburga's is on academic achievement as a means to successful and fulfilling career opportunities; all course work is overlaid with a relevance to everyday life.

We take a similar broad view of the humanities, which we extend far beyond the subject-based contexts of Religious Studies, History and Geography, although as the school is located close to some of the best geographical and historical fieldwork sites in the country, those important subjects are well catered for.

We at Q E believe in having a school where every pupil matters, therefore we are not a large school, and we have no desire or need to be, yet our facilities are second to none. Studies relating to the fabric of our daily lives are brought right up to date within the Business suite. All students take courses in computer Literacy and Information Technology and can gain experience of the world of work via the Young Enterprise Scheme at which Q. E. students have been extremely successful.

Languages

Our diverse and ever-expanding modern languages department offers students the opportunity to study European languages and, because they are often helped by teachers who are native speakers, they should also learn good pronunciation and come to speak the language fluently, with confidence.

The language department is generously resourced with a language laboratory, mutli-media computers, textbooks, cassettes, newspapers and magazines. Our advanced satellite TV and radio receiver enables the school to receive multiple foreign language broadcasts simultaneously and beam them individually into the relevant language lessons.

Teaching in French, Spanish, German and other languages is provided.

Sixth Form - a Special Time

Sixth Form at Queen Ethelburga's is much more than a two-year study course to A-level. It is a time to build the bridge from youth to adulthood, school to higher education and a career.

Students normally opt for three or four academic A-levels. Popular choices, in addition to mainstream subjects studied previously at GCSE, include Business Studies, Performing Arts, and the BHSAI riding examinations at Stages I, II III and PTT. Recent Sixth Formers have gone on to Oxbridge as well as other prestigious universities.

The College has links with many universities in the United Kingdom and abroad, and almost all our Sixth Form students leave us to take up a university of higher education course.

We expect our Sixth Formers to have a well developed sense of responsibility, whether they have spent their earlier school career at Queen Ethelburga's of joined us from other schools.

Sixth Formers do not have to wear uniform. They can wear home clothes provided they are smart. Privileges include the use of a well-equipped fitness room and special common room facilities.
