Career Based Study Courses
As a modern and forward looking
school, Queen Ethelburga's recognises that sixth Form a-level
study may not provide every student with the ideal educational
outcome. Career paths that will be better served by specific courses
are particularly well catered for by Queen Ethelburga's, and there
can be few schools offering a wider, more flexible choice of Sixth
Form studies.
BHSAI
Equestrian Studies
Combining BHSAI Equestrian Studies
with the NNEB Nursery Nursing Course, Leith's Cookery Course or
A-levels is a popular option at Q.E., and the College offers one
of the finest Equestrian Centres in Europe for students who wish
to take up this option. BTEC - Horse Management. NVQs - Levels
1, 2 and 3 in Stable Management.
The acclaimed, £3-million Royal
Equestrian Centre prepares pupils of all levels of ability to
ride with confidence, and gives first class tuition for success
in exams for BHSAI (all stages). All tuition is by BHS approved,
professionally qualified instructors.
Facilities include a large arena
and floodlit, large, all-weather outdoor arenas. There are top
quality covered stables for over 185 horses/ponies, complete with
farrier and veterinary areas and a mare and foal stable. Three
cross-country courses, an all-weather half-mile cantering/jumping
track and nine extensive floodlit, all weather outdoor paddocks
complete this truly remarkable Equestrian Centre.

The Leith's Cookery Course
Q. E. is a pilot centre for the Leith's
Basic Certificate in Food and Wine, a far cry from Domestic Science
of old. Students are taught to budget for, prepare and plan meals
for entertaining and the course is enhanced with visits, demonstrations,
wine tasting etc. The diploma achieved is nationally accredited
and recognised by Leiths. Students may take this course in conjuction
with A-levels, time tabling constraints permitting.
Business Foundation Courses
Students can combine NNEB or BHSAI
studies with high quality Business Foundation courses. These include
RSA CLAIT and Integrated Business Technology and the European
Driving License
|
| The
Q. E. Collegiate Foundation is the only independent college able
to offer this unique opportunity to combine BHSAI, RSA or other
specialist studies such as Art and Design, Languages, Music and
Drama. It may also be possible, if timetabling permits, for a student
to undertake additional academic subjects or exam retakes, subject
to discussions with our Registrar and the Principal. |

Spiritual Development
As an international college, Queen
Ethelburga's encourages students of all denominations to explore
and develop their faith in an atmosphere of tolerance and understanding.
The school chapel is a place of peace and calm, dedicated for
the worship of all faiths, and our own Chaplain holds a regular
Christian service. Our Roman Catholic students attend Mass locally.
A separate peaceful prayer room is provided for our Muslim pupils.
We can arrange for Jewish students to attend a local synagogue
once a month or for specific festivals.
Working with Dyslexia
It is now widely recognised that
some children have specific learning difficulties, such as dyslexia,
which can cast a shadow over their academic potential; it is equally
clear that many extremely bright pupils may fail to achieve their
full potential if such difficulties are not recognised and dealt
with. Queen Ethelburga's College
has particular expertise in this area, with teaching staff who
are well qualified to identify such difficulties and help children
to cope with them. Pupils with specific learning difficulties
benefit from working with specialist teaching staff; they also
gain enormously in confidence from subjects such as drama and
public speaking, and from the support and friendship of their
fellow students.
Outside Interests
We expect and encourage our students
to develop a wide range of interests, and this is reflected in
clubs and societies which enormously extend the social, artistic,
sporting and academic scope offered by the school. Music
and Drama are popular after school activities, both as hobbies
and in preparation for the numerous performances given each year
by Queen Ethelburga's pupils. Outings to cultural events such
as theatre, ballet, opera and orchestral concerts are regularly
arranged.
|
 |
The
activities of the school's clubs and societies have enormous breadth.
Art, chess, badminton, choir, computing, languages, volleyball,
cookery, debating, drama, aerobics: all have active, well-supported
clubs, together with many other interests, from crafts to life saving.

Queen Ethelburga's has an excellent
record of achievement at Gold, Silver and Bronze in the Duke of
Edinburgh's Award Scheme.
Sporting Activities
Individual excellence and a good
team spirit are the overriding aims at Queen Ethelburga's, and
we encourage every pupil to take full advantage of our entire
range of academic, artistic and sporting activities. A
comprehensive choice of individual and team sports enables pupils
to find their own preferences and develop the relevant skills.
The school has a marvellous
Equestrian Centre and offers lessons to full British Horse Society
standard, from beginners to fully competitive levels, using pupils'
own horses or horses provided by the school.
Team sports include hockey, tennis
and netball for girls. We also have an excellent heated indoor
leisure swimming pool. Hockey will be introduced from September
1999. Our large, modern sports hall provides gymnasium, badminton,
and a host of other sporting activities. Boys have specialist
coaching in rugby, football and cricket, and a separate programme
of outdoor pursuits.
We also have five floodlit, all-weather
tennis courts, two floodlit, all weather netball/basketball courts,
twenty floodlit rounders practice nets, a floodlit all-weather
running track, a floodlit international sized lacrosse/ hockey/football
pitch, two floodlit high jump areas and three floodlit, all weather
volleyball courts.
School teams, from Under 12's to
Under 18's, compete in hockey, netball, swimming, football and
rugby, and cross-country running during the winter. In summer,
tennis, rounders, cricket and athletics hold sway. Our riders
enjoy year-round competitions and compete at many shows with great
success.
|
 |
Off campus, we encourage an interest
in outdoor activities and run a special course each summer term
for members of the Third and Lower fourth forms, in which rock-climbing,
canoeing, absailing and caving are amongst the highlights. Weekend
expeditions provide training for the Duke of Edinburgh's award
and we run skiing trips to Austria and France.
We encourage every student to recognise
the importance of physical exercise and good diet in maintaining
a fit and healthy lifestyle.
